Technology in the Classroom

How have you already integrated technology into your teaching?

I have tried several ways of integrating technology into my teaching. One way that I have done this was through Mircosoft Excel. I used this program with my Algebra I students. They solved a problem involving a formula. They learned how to use Excel to create and calculate the formulas. In addition, I have used Geometer's Sketchpad with my Elementary Functions class. They created a sine wave tracer through this program. The activity helped them to make a connection between the unit circle and the actual graph of the function.

Currently, I am part of an electronic portfolio initiative at my school. This year I am having one of my classes create an electronic portfolio displaying various assgnments from all of their classes. The students are creating their own web page using the program Contribute. This has been a learning experience for me as well because I do not have any background in this type of technology. It is exciting because it is so easy to use which means that there are plenty of opportunities to enrich the learning process of our students.

I use technology im my classroom in a couple of ways. I use the computer to allow my students to respond to their independent books. Then, the computer which is connected to a projector allows me to share the response with the rest of the class. This is a great way to motivate my students and to help jump start class discussions.

I have also used technology in our classroom trips to the library. When my students have read a book that they have enjoyed, they are able to do a author/book search to come up with the title of a similar book that they might enjoy. This has been especially helpful for my reluctant readers.

Personally, I have used the internet, adolescent literature and book talk sites, to help me stay on top of the latest young adolescent books and authors to share with my students. It would be impossible to keep up with all the new books on my own. It is an important part of my job to help my students pick the best book for their independent reading level.

I am hoping to become more adept at using technology through this class. For my project, I am going to do a strategy powerpoint lesson. I am looking forward to have my students visit the computer lab and I am hoping this will be a motivating tool.

I am sorry that this is a late response. I have had some difficulty with using my AOL e-mail and had to create a new e-mail through yahoo. I enjoy troubleshooting when I have the time. I have used an excel spreadsheet to record and calculate my grades, for creating graphs from data, and just recording data. I love the sorting option! Most students use Word for word processing. We have used Amazon and other sites to post book reviews and to get needed information on authors and copyright dates.

My students are in the process of creating powerpoints to present the non-fiction articles that many have downloaded on the topic of their choice.Last year we experimented with podcasting and imovie to create documentaries and radio shows.

I have found two things to be true:

1)Many students really do know more than I do about the capabilities of the computor (One of my students built his own computer!)

2)No matter how much I learn, there is always something more to know and new things coming out as we speak. It is mind boggling!!!!

Heather, I would like to know how you are setting up the electronic portfolio in your school. I think it is great that you have this in place.
