Internet Safety

One of the ideas presented in Chapter Two was Internet Safety. The book talked about each school having an acceptable use policy. Does your school have a policy? Does it contain the following elements: an explanation of the Internet and its role, acceptable behavior when using the Internet, consequences, and a place for all parties to sign?

The high school that I am currently teaching at does have an Acceptable Use Policy. It is easy to obtain. They have a link to it on the school's web page. It contains information regarding acceptable use, rights & responsibilities of students, and consequences of certain actions such as vandalism. At the end there is a place for students and parents to sign. The purpose of the Information Technology Network is included at the beginning of the policy.

This policy is a multiyear agreement. It looks as if once a student and parent sign the form it is used as long as they are a student here. The last time the policy was revised was in December 14, 1999. This policy is held in place for all students as well as all employess/volunteers in the district.

ok-I've had trouble getting on so I had to have a trial run before I actually posted my comment. We also have an Acceptable Use policy at our school that every student and his/her parents have to sign at the beginning of the year. Since the 7th and 8th grade both have projects throughout the year that require research on the internet, it is important that every student has this signed in the beginning of the year. Furthermore, our school has a blocker that blocks certain inappropriate sites fron the students. However, as we all know, the kids do seem to know their way around these blockers. As we saw in class on Thursday, you cannot always protect students from sites that may not be appropriate for the classroom content. For example, our group was trying to do some research on the rainforest and we ended up on a Christian website. This is what scares me about allowing my students Internet access. You never know where they may end up. How can you watch all your students at one time?

We also have an Acceptable Use Policy in Danbury. Students sign this policy along with their parents when they enter our school as students. the media center is in charge of keeping track of this and only the students that handed in the policy with both parent and student signatures are allowed to use the internet. If the student misuses the internet, they are blocked and can only use the computer offline. All computer use is monitored for staff as well as students.
